Aid barriers and the rise of philanthropic protectionism

This article discusses the restrictions imposed by many countries on civil society organizations that impede them from receiving foreign funding. These organizations are coming under increasing scrutiny as governments grow wary of foreign influence and increasingly perceive it as a threat to political stability. It explores the rationale for increased restrictions on foreign funding in this context and draws from several examples from Asia including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.
