Asia gives differently. We measure it on its own terms.
Asia gives in its own ways. We study it on its own terms.
Asia’s wealth, its family businesses and its social sectors are shaped by local histories, values, regulations and choices. Understanding them takes evidence gathered close to the ground.
CAPS was founded in 2013 to build that evidence. We gather our own data, on the ground, across 17 economies. We publish what we learn. And we use it to advise the funders, foundations and governments who want private capital to do more good than it does today.
From a single idea to a regional institution.
CAPS started in Hong Kong with two founders and a premise. In 2013, Ronnie Chan and Dr. Ruth A. Shapiro set out from a simple belief: philanthropy in Asia has its own distinct character, and understanding it deeply is the key to improving both its quality and its quantity.
More than a decade on, that premise holds, and our work has grown with it. But our commitment is the same: to understand what makes it work in Asia, so that it can achieve more.
