Business for Good: Maximizing the Value of Social Enterprises in Asia

The rise of social enterprises in Asia

Social enterprises and impact investment are emerging trends in Asia.

There are an estimated 1.2 million social enterprises in the six Asian economies we studied in depth, plus an additional 3.5 million in the two we spotlighted, China and India. Governments in just six economies are spending US$1 billion per year to support social enterprises and all startups.

And yet, there is a lack of research on the needs of social enterprises and which actions will have maximum impact. With 60% of the world’s total population and a 50% share of global GDP, Asia still only receives 16% of the global impact investment pool.

Business for Good quantifies what social enterprises need: funding, talent and enabling ecosystems. We also map out who can help and how: philanthropists, businesses, investors and governments. Based on surveys and interviews of more than 700 social enterprises, incubators, accelerators, investors and government officials, this original data not only informs our insights, but forms a unique repository of evidence in this space.
